The Racer's Group is home again.
SONOMA, Calif. - May 10, 2002 - After a trip to Le Mans, France for the preliminary practice session for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, The Racer's Group is happy to be back at its home track for the fourth annual Grand Prix of Sonoma presented by Fosters on May 19th. This race marks the second round in this year's American Le Mans Series. Team owner and driver Kevin Buckler will pilot the No. 66 Porsche 911GT3-RS along with co-driver Marino Franchitti.
The team will also contest the No. 67 car which will be driven by Vic Rice of San Rafael, Calif. Rice's co-driver will be announced at a later date.
The Racer's Group has been run and operated from Sears Point since 1995, therefore Buckler is quite familiar with his home track. He hopes he and the team will continue the momentum that has taken them to a class victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and an invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A victory at the team's home track would certainly be a peak for the already exciting 2002 season. Buckler won at the California Grand Prix (an IMSA race) in 1995 and has been at the top of the grid every year since. He hopes to make this race his second win at home on the twisting,12-turn 2.52-mile road course.
"Sears Point is probably the most physically demanding of all the tracks we drive. It is highly technical and really requires concentration and focus like no other track. There are simply no straights; you are constantly turning the wheel through the blind corners and elevation changes. The track is really challenging and is a real drivers track. It's my first time driving with Marino but I am confident that we can do well. I am looking forward to the race," Buckler said.
The Racer's Group is a manufacturer and distributor of high performance Porsche parts, an engine and chassis building and tuning facility, a full service Porsche prep facility and a professional race team. Additionally, they provide electrical and mechanical engineering services, driver development and "arrive and drive" services. They are also the North American distributor of the UNICHIP, a fully programmable piggyback computer system that enhances the performance of streetcars and currently support approximately 130 dealers in the U.S. The Racer's Group is located in the paddock at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California.
The Racer's Group is excited to welcome its primary sponsors Suncoast Porsche of Sarasota Florida, Thalist.com and Rennlist.com to the American Le Mans 2002 season.
The two-hour 45-minute Grand Prix of Sonoma presented by Fosters will be televised live by the SPEED Channel beginning at 1 p.m. (PDT) on May 19.
