British American Motorsport (BAM!) left round 4 of the American Le Mans Series at Lime Rock Park disappointed after a late race accident cost the team what looked like would be their first ALMS podium finish. However, BAM! moved on to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma California for round 5 with high hopes of achieving this goal and at the 1:45 PM race end they had done just that by finishing 3rd. The first podium finish in the ALMS for BAM! since the team's inception in 2004.
For the Infineon Raceway event BAM!'s now familiar silver & blue livery was changed to reflect the team's tire supply partner & co-sponsor, Yokohama Tire Company. The # 43 BAM! Porsche was wrapped in full Yokohama ADVAN black and red livery. Yokohama was also a primary sponsor of both the event and the television coverage on CBS Sports.
BAM! and Yokohama engineers spent the two days of pre-race testing evaluating various tire and car set up options. This task was made especially difficult by the high ambient and track temperatures of the California summer weather. Once the car and tire set-up was achieved, it was left to the lightning fast pairing of Mike Rockenfeller and Wolf Henzler to race for victory.
Rockenfeller started the race and quickly moved up to second place which he held throughout his stint despite a concerted effort by the #44 Flying Lizard Porsche to relieve him of that position. On lap 51 Mike pitted for fuel and tires and handed over driving duties to Wolf Henzler. Wolf continued to maintain the second position only loosing out in the final 15 laps to the hard charging #31 Petersen White Lightning Porsche being driven by Patrick Long.
For the team, the drivers and Yokohama a podium finish was very welcomed. Combined with the 24 Hours of Le Mans GT2 class victory in June, the podium at Infineon shows the partnership between BAM! and Yokohama to be a competitive combination for the rest of the ALMS season.
BAM! Is now preparing for round 6 of the American Le Mans Series which will be held at Portland International Raceway on Saturday, July 31, 2005.
