Sonoma, California - ACEMCO Motorsports finished a disappointing fifth in round four of the American Le Mans Series race at Infineon raceway today. The team walks away shaking their heads.
Johnny Mowlem drove the number 63 ACEMCO Motorsports/Saleen S7-R for one-hour-thirty-eight minutes before coming into the pits under a yellow flag for fuel, tires and a driver change. "The car was difficult to drive with very low grip. We had a fuel pressure problem and it was getting worse." Mowlem drove much of the race in third place, on his 53rd lap the second place Corvette went behind the wall allowing Johnny to inherit that position. "It is so frustrating because of the GM crash we were in second position, I feel sorry for the whole team. But that is the nature of the sport."
Teammate Terry Borcheller had to back the Saleen S7-R down pit road following the axle failures. "I was coming out of turn eleven when I lost drive, the car went from accelerate to slip. I knew we had a broken axle, it broke right in the middle." Terry had to wait for the IMSA officials to grant him permission to back down pit row. Since the failure happened on the track Terry would be the only person allowed to work on the car which lead to its exclusion. "It just doesn't make any sense, we were in second position when the axle broke, it is very frustrating for everyone."
"Johnny did a great job for a long stint in hot conditions. Terry didn't even make one lap before the axles broke, he came out of the hairpin in second gear and snapped both rear axles right in the middle. We have never seen anything like this before, and we were in second place. This has been a very tough weekend for us, I am glad the next race is only seven days away," said owner Jeff Giangrande.
The team leaves immediately for Oregon to prepare for round five to be run at Portland Raceway on July 25.
