Madison, Wis. — Having scored its third American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón victory in four races, Level 5 Motorsports heads north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with confidence, and with a new driver, as the Scott Tucker-owned organization continues its pursuit of a third consecutive P2 championship title.
Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportCar Grand Prix, held at the historic 10-turn, 2.459-mile road course formerly known as Mosport, will mark the Level 5 debut of IZOD IndyCar Series race winner Mike Conway. The 29-year-old Englishman, who competes full-time in the FIA World Endurance Championship, will be filling in for fellow open-wheel ace Ryan Briscoe, who suffered a fractured wrist in last weekend’s Honda Indy Toronto.
Conway will join Tucker, a nine-time national driving champion and current P2 points leader Marino Franchitti in Level 5’s Siemens/Alpina Watches/Ohiya Casino Resort-sponsored Honda Performance Development ARX-03b race cars. Tucker will again pull double duty between both cars this weekend, with the final driver designations to be made later this week.
“It’s unfortunate what happened to Ryan last weekend, especially after our win at Lime Rock. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back in a Level 5 car soon,” said Tucker, who is closing in on his milestone 100th career victory. “Luckily, we’ve found a great sub in Mike Conway, who we’ve been watching this year in both IndyCar and the WEC. Our hopes are high for this weekend.”While having established himself as a top single-seater driver, with a recent IndyCar Series win at Detroit to his credit, Conway has also excelled in sportscar racing, where he currently drives for fellow P2 team, G-Drive Racing, in the FIA WEC. Impressively, Conway made a podium appearance in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans in his race debut. This weekend will mark his first trip to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
“Firstly I would like to wish Ryan Briscoe a speedy recovery and hope he gets better soon,” said Conway. “It’s a great opportunity to drive for Level 5 Motorsports at Mosport, so I appreciate Scott Tucker and David Stone giving me this chance. They are a great team and have already had some success this year. I need to also thank MB Partners and my manager Mark Blundell for getting this deal done and look forward to having a good weekend.”
Level 5 Team Manager David Stone added: "Every team has their usual suspects they call upon, but in the end, most of them had other commitments due to such short notice. However, Mike is someone I've been watching on the IndyCar circuit and have been seeing good things in. We’ve got very good references on him from people that we're close to within HPD and other sources.
“He was still here from the IndyCar race in Toronto and we were able to make a connection. At the end of the day, we felt he would be a really good choice to put in the car. He's certainly quick and has got experience in running prototypes. While he has not been to Mosport before, he’ll have a lot of good support around him and all of our engineering and data reports to fall back on. We think he'll do a good job.”
After enjoying a hard fought battle with P2 competitors Extreme Speed Motorsports at Lime Rock Park, Level 5 remains in the championship lead in both the driver and team standings heading into the midway point of the 10-race season. CTMP has been a particularly good track for Tucker, who set the race’s fastest lap in P2 last year and will again be competing in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites powered by Mazda championship this weekend.
