Joest Audi leads wet Road Atlanta morning practice

BRASELTON, Ga. - The Infineon Team Joest Audi R8 remained on top of the speed chart Saturday morning as American Le Mans Series teams continued preparing for Sunday's Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta at Road Atlanta.

The Saturday morning practice session was run in wet conditions following a morning-long rain, causing speeds to be much lower than Friday's test session that was run in dry conditions. Nevertheless, German drivers Frank Biela and Marco Werner paced the session with a lap of 1:23.847.

The ADT Champion Racing Audi R8 of JJ Lehto and Johnny Herbert was second-fastest at 1:26.448, followed by the Dyson Racing Lola-MG of James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger at 1:27.104. The Dyson car also led the LMP 675 class.

The second Dyson car of Andy Wallace and Chris Dyson was fourth at 1:28.342 with the Prodrive Ferrari 550 of Tomas Enge and Peter Kox fifth at 1:29.856. The Ferrari also led the GTS class.

Fastest in the GT class was the Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RS of Lucas Luhr and Sascha Maassen at 1:34.996.

The rainy conditions contributed to several incidents during the session, including a red flag only 10 minutes into the session when cars were involved in two separate incidents.

Melanie Paterson, driving the Essex Racing Lola-Nissan, spun in turn five, causing damage to the left front of the car, including the splitter, the corner of the nose and the suspension. "Going into turn five was really wet," she said. "I locked up the brakes and did a slow spin."

In a separate area of the track, Michael Schrom spun The Racers Group Porsche and reported later that his wet shoes slipped off of the pedals.

Later in the session, Kevin Buckler got off course in another one of the Racers Group entries and stopped at turn six, while Eliseo Salazar got off course into the gravel in turn 10 while driving the JMB Racing USA Ferrari. At the end of the session, Chris McMurry spun at the entry to the support pit area in the Team Bucknum Pilbeam MP91.

Today's second practice session will be at 2 p.m., with qualifying to start at 3:10
