BRASELTON, GA (Sept. 16, 2004) -- Johnny Mowlem and the ACEMCO Motorsports team are making their final preparations for the Sept. 25 Petit Le Mans race in the American Le Mans Series at Road Atlanta.
Mowlem said the recent testing the team has done, and the addition of veteran sports car racer Joao Barbosa to the team roster could improve what has already been a successful season. Barbosa will share the driving duties with Mowlem and season-long co-driver Terry Borcheller.
"Terry and I are pleased to have Joao join us at Atlanta," Mowlem said. "He has plenty of experience driving the Saleen SR7 and it is a luxury to have a third driver in a long race like the Petit Le Mans."
The ACEMCO team wracked up the testing miles getting ready for the Road Atlanta event and the last race of the season at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. Tests at Putnam Park in Indiana and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course allowed the team to make gains. The Mid-Ohio test was a 10-hour session specially aimed at making ready for the Petit.
"So far this year we've been on the podium five out of the seven races, but never on the top spot"" said Mowlem. "The Petit is a 10-hour race and we know anything can happen. It's the kind of event where the fastest car doesn't always win, and although we've made huge strides forward this year in terms of speed, I think it's our reliability that will have to be one hundred percent if we're to take our first victory. That, and some luck also!"
The team can clinch the IMSA Cup championship with a strong finish at Atlanta. The IMSA Cup goes to the best-finishing privately backed GTS team.
One of Britain's most successful and personable sport car drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2003, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award, a ranking of all British racers competing in international series, including Formula One. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
