Petit Le Mans 5 Hour Update

September 26, 2009 - Braselton, Georgia - 4:20pm - At the five hour mark of what will most likely be a 10 hour race, heavy rain has flooded the track, creating a 2.5 mile skating rink. After a flurry of unscheduled pit stops at the end of hour four to switch to rain tires, the Flying Lizard No. 45 Porsche is now P5 and the No. 44 Porsche is P7. The race was officially declared a "wet race" at the start, and most of the cars started on rain tires, and ran the first hour before switching to slicks. The No. 45 started fifth on the grid, and the No. 13 10th. After the first hour, things began to dry out. Over the next three hours and multiple yellow flags, the lead GT2 pack traded positions among the No. 3 and No. 4 Corvettes, the No. 92 BMW, the No. 45 Flying Lizard Porsche, the No. 87 Farnbacher Loles Porsche and the No. 62 Risi Ferrari. The track stayed relatively dry until the halfway point, when a downpour sent teams in once again for rain tires. An early call for rain tires gave the No. 62 Risi Ferrari an advantage over the rest of the GT2 field, allowing them to take the lead and gain a lap on the rest of the GT2 field. Just before the 5 hour mark, race control called a "rain red flag" - instructing teams to line up in pit lane and cover cars. Teams are not allowed to work on their cars. The cars will be released when the water on the track dries out enough to continue.
