JJ Lehto in the ADT Champion Racing Audi R8 set the fastest time of the day Friday at Road America as American Le Mans Series teams had two hours of testing for Sunday's Road America 500. Lehto toured the 4.048-mile circuit in 1:53.770, averaging 128.090 mph on the longest circuit on the ALMS schedule.
The Dyson Racing team, which won the most recent ALMS race two weeks ago in Canada, had mechanical problems in its #16 Lola B01/60-AER and drivers James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger managed only a handful of laps. However, the team's other entry driven by Chris Dyson and Andy Wallace was third-fastest overall and in the LMP1 class at 1:55.132.
Intersport Racing's Lola B2K/40-Judd, which has won three straight ALMS events in the LMP2 class for smaller, less-powerful Prototypes, led the class on Friday when Robin Liddell turned a lap of 2:00.470. Liddell will co-drive with Clint Field.
Miracle Motorsports, which has brought out a new Courage C65 chassis for this race, was second-fastest in the P2 class with a 2:05.302 by drivers Ian James and James Gue. Miracle's older Lola-Nissan was third in class at 2:10.094 driven by Mike Borkowski and John Macaluso.
In the GTS class, the two Chevrolet Corvette C5-Rs of Corvette Racing led the way, with the #4 of Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta fastest at 2:02.122. The #3 Corvette of Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell was second in class at 2:02.678, followed by the ACEMCO Saleen S7R of Terry Borcheller and Johnny Mowlem at 2:04.116.
The two Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR entries were fastest in the GT class. Jorg Bergmeister set the fastest time in the #23 car that he will share with Timo Bernhard at 2:09.190, while the Romain Dumas/Marc Lieb entry was second at 2:09.333. Third-fastest was the J3 Racing Porsche of Justin Jackson and Tim Sugden at 2:10.758.
Saturday's schedule will include two practice sessions of one hour each prior to the 1:55 p.m. (CDT) start of ALMS qualifying. Also on the schedule for Saturday is an autograph session featuring all ALMS drivers at 11:15 a.m. and a Fan Forum at 3:30 p.m.
