FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Feb. 27, 2001) - The featured event for the Leather Center Grand Prix of Texas weekend is the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) race on Sunday, March 4, at 1:00 p.m. But, race fans at Texas Motor Speedway will enjoy two additional series battling for the checkered flag. The popular SPEEDVISION World Challenge and Star Mazda series return to the Texas road course to join the ALMS for the weekend of racing. "This is quite a weekend of racing for our fans," speedway vice president and general manager Eddie Gossage said. "The GT and Touring cars of the SPEEDVISION series are some of the most entertaining race cars in America. And, the open wheel cars of the Star Mazda series challenging all the turns on our road course are exciting to watch as well." The Texas race opens the season for the SPEEDVISION World Challenge series. Touring Car division points champion Pierre Kleinubing of Brazil begins the defense of his 2000 title on the Texas Motor Speedway road course. Kleinubing finished 11th in last year's inaugural Texas race in his Acura Integra. The SPEEDVISION World Challenge GT Series 2000 champion will also be racing at Texas this weekend. Terry Borcheller of Phoenix, Ariz., placed 28th after starting third in the field at the Texas race last September. He was knocked out of last fall's race after being involved in an accident on the 21st lap of the 26 lap race. The Texas layout also proved to be very good to the 2000 Star Mazda Series season champion. Bernardo Martinez of Toledo, Ohio, went on to win the series points championship after finishing second in Texas in grueling heat. Martinez was four minutes off the pace of winning driver Grant Ryley last year.
The SPEEDVISION Touring Car race is Sunday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Star Mazda race at 11:15 a.m., the American Le Mans Series race at 1:00 p.m., and the SPEEDVISION GT race at 4:10 p.m. For ticket information for the Leather Center Grand Prix of Texas, call the speedway ticket hotline at 817-215-8500 or go online to www.texasmotor.speedway.com.
