Panoz srash and rain spoil opening day at Mosport.
Panoz Motor Sports endured a tough day in opening practice for round seven of the ALMS at Mosport today with torrential rain and a crash by Jan Magnussen bringing an early end to the afternoon.
The #50 car of Magnussen and David Brabham had set the second fastest time before a thunder storm struck the circuit early in the single practice session.
Late in the session as the track began to dry, Magnussen spun the car exiting turn nine, striking the wall with the rear of the car.
The rear of the car was extensively damaged, but the Panoz crew has begun work to get the car back on track for tomorrow's on-track schedule.
"The car was really strong in the wet, but I went down a gear at one stage and the back stepped out on me," Magnussen said.
"I thought it was going to be OK, but the right rear tire hit the painted kerb and the car just spun around.
"It went in pretty hard. The crash really knocked the wind out of me, but the guys have told me they can get the car back on track.
"We were probably lucky we have our new gearbox which has a long carbon fiber tailbox which the wing mounts to. That probably took a lot of the impact and saved the tub.
"I am pretty sore, but the HANS device seems to have done its job."
The second Panoz of Bryan Herta and Bill Auberlen finished the session as 5th fastest, setting a time of 1:13.598.
"We were just out of luck with the weather. It was fine all day before the session started, but then it really started rain hard," Herta said.
"This is my first time here, so having it rain like that certainly wasn't ideal for me learn the track."
The Panoz crew will work overnight to repair the car in time for tomorrow's two practice sessions. The single qualifying session is scheduled for 3.05pm tomorrow for the prototype class.
