ACEMCO Racing Qualifies Third in GTS at Mosport
Bowmanville, Canada - ACEMCO Motorsports driver Johnny Mowlem qualified the number 63/ACEMCO Motorsports/Saleen S7-R in third position in the GTS class for round six of the American Le Mans Series race to be run at Mosport tomorrow.
The team rebounds from a difficult practice this morning to qualify with a time of 1:14.792 at a speed of 119 mph. The ALMS qualifying session was four total laps with two flying laps, similar to Sears Point two races ago. Johnny turned his qualifying time on the first flying lap.
Johnny Mowlem is pleased with the effort today. "We knew it would be a struggle with the qualifying procedures. With only two laps it was difficult to get the tires to come in. We are usually quickest on the third or fourth lap. We figured that we would be around 1:14.5 or 1:14.6, but I couldn't get the grip we needed. We are a little over a second off of the Corvette, enough to make them worry."
The team tested the car at Mosport on Tuesday and according to Johnny it really helped. "We lost a lot of time this morning due to a front damper issue, we were only able to do six or seven laps, so we needed Tuesday to be where we are today. Plus we had issues from Sears Point and Portland with the halfshaft that was essential to work through. I am pleased with the car for the race, the team has done a great job."
Teammate Terry Borcheller is racing in the Rolex Series at Mid-Ohio today. He will be back at Mosport for tomorrow's race. During the warm-up on Friday Terry had a great stint in the car. "The S7-R set-up is really, really good. The car is beautiful to drive, very well balanced with a lot more confidence in rear of the car. It has killer transition left to right through the esses."
"The set-up of the car is much better due to the testing that we have done this week at Mosport. The Saleen sits lower than before with more down force," said Jeff Giangrande, team owner. "The single car qualifying format doesn't suit our tires, we need more laps. We should be much better in the race."
The August 8th race at Mosport will be televised live on CBS starting at 12:00 p.m. Eastern.
