Claudia's quick -- takes class pole.
October 4, 2002 Miami, FL-- KnightHawk teammate Claudia Huertgen placed the team's #11 Gestetner/DNTLworks MG Lola 675 first on the class grid for the Cadillac American Le Mans Challenge race on Saturday, October 5.
Huertgen secured the class pole by spinning a best lap time of 1:08.559 during her 11-lap run in today's Qualifying Session. Huertgen reunited with her 2001 season teammates at Mosport and helped the team score the LMP 675 class win at Laguna Seca. Claudia's effort also placed the Steve Knight and Mel Hawkins team 8th overall.
"First -- I would like to thank Mel for letting me drive this weekend," said the grinning Huertgen. "The session was easy to do because I had a perfect car. The team has been working very hard and very good -- so it was easy for me to do well. At this kind of track you need a little luck -- we had a little luck -- and so we're on the pole!"
Huertgen not only grabbed the pole today -- but with that pole -- put KnightHawk in a tie with rival Intersport for first in the LMOP 675 Team Championship.
"Both Steve and I are very, very happy and really proud of Claudia," said Hawkins. "Claudia seems to be at her best in difficult race circumstances like we have here at the downtown street circuit. This track is very difficult -- to say the least -- it's really slick in portions. Claudia is really good in rain and in slick conditions and she certainly showed that today. She beat her competitors handily and we couldn't be more proud."
