Marino Receives International Award
Scottish Motor Racing Club - Awards

Edinburgh, Scotland. Sunday, 8th February, 2011 - Exactly nine years after winning the 2001 British GTO Championship and being presented with The William Lyons Trophy for the best sportscar driving performance in a national/international event or championship, Marino Franchitti was once again honoured with the same prestigious award by the Scottish Motor Racing Club for his performance in the 2010 American Le Mans Series.

The SMRC Annual Awards Dinner held in Edinburgh on Saturday had been postponed in December following the very bad snow storms that engulfed the entire British Isles towards the end of last year. Marino was one of a host of Scottish motor racing drivers present at the dinner, not least of the those attending were his brother and current Indy Car Champion, Dario Franchitti, as well as top sportscar driver, Allan McNish, and the three times Formula One World Champion, Sir Jackie Stewart.

Competing with Patrуn Highcroft Racing and driving the #1 LMP2 HPD ARX- 01c, Marino was present at all the 2010 ALMS races providing valuable input to the team and partnering David Brabham and Simon Pagenaud in the three main ALMS endurance events; the 12 Hours of Sebring, where Marino took pole position and finished the race second in class; the Six House of Laguna Seca which Marino and his co-drivers won overall, and Petit Le Mans where Marino helped his team to an LMP2 class win and back to back ALMS Championship successes. The Highcroft team also competed at the most prestigious of all the endurance events, the jewel in the sportscar crown, the 24 Hours of Le Mans; it was Marino who was selected by the team to take the chequered flag and finish the race ninth in LMP2.

Following such a successful international season, Marino was once again honoured by the SMRC and it was his brother that presented him with The William Lyons Trophy.

"It's fantastic to be presented with this trophy again by my home Club, and to be recognised in what has been an outstanding year for Scottish drivers internationally, makes it even more special" said Marino. "As a Club and as a Country we certainly have a lot to be proud of, both from the past and looking forward to the future. Having Dario present the trophy was very touching and I thank the SMRC club and the President, Allan McNish for this award."
