LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Allan McNish destroyed the Las Vegas Motor Speedway track qualifying record Saturday in winning the pole position for Sunday's American Le Mans Series Grand Prix of Las Vegas.

McNish, who has won five ALMS events this season with co-driver Rinaldo Capello, scored the eighth consecutive pole for the powerful Audi R8 Prototype and will lead 36 starters in the two-hour, 45-minute sports car endurance race on the 2.25-mile road racing circuit.

Scotland's McNish had won the provisional pole under wet track conditions on Friday, but the dry track on Saturday allowed him to run a record 121.571 mph lap, breaking the previous track record of 120.170 set by David Brabham in 1999.

McNish can clinch the ALMS driver championship by winning Sunday's race.

The Audi R8 of Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro qualified second fastest, with the Panoz LMP-1 of Jan Magnussen and David Brabham third.

Olivier Beretta of Monaco, driving a Dodge Viper GTS-R that he will share with Karl Wendlinger of Austria, led GTS class qualifying with a lap of 109.234 mph and will start 11th overall. GT class qualifying was led by the Porsche 911 GT3 R of Monaco's Lucas Luhr, who will co-drive in Sunday's race with Dirk Muller of Monaco and start 19th overall. The speed was 104.062.
