Tyre Trouble Denies Zytek
20th October, 2007 - Tyre trouble at the final round of the American Le Mans Series meant that the Zytek 07S LMP2 car was unable to match the stunning pace it had already shown at Petit Le Mans and in Europe
Having struggled throughout practice and qualifying to find grip, the Zytek Motorsports team made some dramatic changes to the set up of the 07S. The speed of the car during the early laps indicated that some improvement had, indeed, been made. However, towards the end of the second hour, the car was pushed off the track by Tony Kanaan in an LMP2 Acura. "We were in a really good spot in the middle of the race," reflected driver Stefan Mucke.
The car returned to the fray with Hayanari Shimoda at the wheel. However, within a few laps the young Japanese had left the track causing considerable bodywork damage. Again the team worked hard to get the car back in the race but in the last hour Hayanari crashed again, hitting the wall hard at Turn 6.
The customer 07S Zytek of Arena International Motorsport did look to be heading for a podium place in the LMP1 class. However, it too was struggling with low tyre temperature and fell back to fourth in category during the closing stages.
"It has been a disappointing end to our trip to the USA," said Zytek team manager Trevor Foster. "One of the strengths of the 07S chassis design is that it is, normally, very easy on tyres. However, this came to hurt us at this particular race and we struggled to generate enough temperature with the tyres available."
