Panoz opens Strongly in Laguna Alms practice.

Panoz Motor Sports made strong improvement during opening practice at Laguna Seca Raceway in California today for round eight of the 2002 American Le Mans Series.

Dane Jan Magnussen stopped the clocks at 1 minute, 16.785 seconds to lead the Panoz charge in third place. Bryan Herta was sixth fastest in his Laguna sportscar debut at 1:18.299.

Magnussen is looking forward to further adapting the Panoz "Spirit of America" machine to the challenging Laguna Seca circuit prior to the single qualifying session tomorrow.

"The is very good and has excellent traction out of the slow corners - especially through the corkscrew," Magnussen said.

"We made very good progress in today's session and I think we will have a very consistent package for the race.

"The overall balance of the car feels extremely good and we just need to find a little bit more outright speed on new tires and low tanks during the qualifying session tomorrow.

"Brabs (co-driver David Brabham) and I are quite pleased with the progress so far this weekend."

Bryan Herta and Bill Auberlen aboard the #51 Panoz also made strong improvement during the practice session, finding additional time with each change made by the Panoz crew in pit lane.

"Every time Bryan and I came in and made a change, the car went quicker and quicker," Auberlen said.

"That is a very good sign. The progress has all been in the right direction and we aim to continue that tomorrow.

"We have two one-hour practice sessions tomorrow to further improve the car and I know Bryan is extremely keen to try to pull out something really special in the qualifying session."
