MOWLEM, CORSA TEAM THIRD IN LMP1 AT MAZDA RACEWAY
MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2008) -- Johnny Mowlem took advantage of his racing experience and led his Corsa Motorsports teammates to a third place podium finish in the LMP1 class in the Monterey Sports Car Championships American Le Mans Series race at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca.
Mowlem drove the team's Zytek 07S during the second half of the race, following the opening stint by co-driver Stefan Johansson. Mowlem used his experience to generate an extended session on a tank of fuel and managed to make the end of the race without the need for a splash-and-go pit stop. This was quite critical as at Mowlem's first stop the starter motor failed and they lost a lap whilst trying to re-start, so the team weren't sure if they pitted again whether they would be able to re-start.
"I'm delighted for Steve Pruitt and the entire Corsa Motorsports team, and Zytek Motorsport as well," Mowlem said. "We raced to a good LMP1 podium. The car was quick, especially early on when there was heat in the track. It was a little bit trickier as it got cooler. We were conserving fuel at the end."
The LMP1 class is reserved for the world's most powerful sports cars.
The race marked only the second appearance in competition for the Corsa-Zytek combination. The team will unveil its hybrid engine, a combination of an ethanol-powered internal combustion engine and an electric motor, at the 2009 12 Hours of Sebring.
Mowlem and the Corsa team started the ALMS campaign racing a Ferrari in the GT2 class. But when the opportunity popped up to work with the ultra high tech Zytek factory operation, Pruitt made the decision to change classes.
"These two races, here and at Atlanta, give us a baseline for further development work," Mowlem said. "We'll have a busy off season!!"
