Creation Set Qualifying Alight and Grab Pole
In only their second ever American Le Mans Series race, the Creation Autosportif team entered their name into the Series' record books today when they convincingly claimed pole position from the ALMS P1 Champions, Audi.
Nicolas Minassian set a fastest time of 1:15.893 on his 6th lap out, having played out a careful qualifying strategy of tyre conservation and timing. The DBA-Zytek sat in the pits for the first six of the 20-minute qualifying session, allowing the opposition to set a benchmark time.
Nicolas Minassian (French, age 31, lives in England): "I think the track was a little bit quicker this morning because it was a little bit fresher and the engine could breathe better, but we did a quicker time this afternoon as we could do some clear laps in a row and get into a good rhythm. We did good work on the car, improving it for qualifying although you always think you can go quicker still. I was really pumped up and pushed like crazy in the car because we know how good the Audis are. I was trying to do a '15' as I knew that was what would be needed to take the pole."
Jamie Campbell-Walter (British, age 31, lives in England): "It was really good from where I stood! I think Nic did a really great job. We worked through a lot of stuff in the practice sessions and we had a good car for qualifying. We tried a number of different set ups this morning so are sure we've also got a good car for the race which is important."
Mike Jankowski (Team Owner): "Naturally I'm really pleased. Everyone's done a fabulous job. Nic in doing what he did, but also the whole team who have pulled it all together for these two US races, all the work and effort they've put into it. We've got a big challenge ahead of us tomorrow but that's where we really want to be. We want to be where we are now at the end of the race tomorrow."
Creation have had a very satisfying two days of practice at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, always challenging or at the top of the time sheets in every practice session that has taken place. As Minassian says, "We know the car well now, having raced it in the Le Mans Endurance Series. We know how it reacts, how to make it quicker and every race we have got better and better. Tomorrow will be tough, because the opposition is very good, but we hope we can live up to Bicks' boast that we'll show the Audis a thing or two tomorrow!" ["Bicks" is Ian Bickerton, co-founder and Team Manager of the team. He cannot unfortunately be at Laguna Seca and has been following the team's progress from the edge of his seat back in England!]
