Mechanical Forces Marcelli, Intersport to an Early Retirement at Sebring
Dublin, Ohio (March 24th 2011) – After months of anticipation and hard work going into this years 59th Annual Mobile 1 12 Hours of Sebring, Intersport Racings protégé Kyle Marcelli and team were forced to an early retirement due to an unexpected engine failure from overheating.
After recently announcing the signings of Rusty Mitchell and Tomy Drissi to co-drive alongside the young Canadian, the team went into Sebring with confidence and high hopes. With record setting numbers, it was definitely a full field of the most exotic cars that took the green flag which marked the start of the 2011 American Le Mans Series.
For Marcelli, this represented his second 12 Hours of Sebring start, a race in which a win would add very well to his resume. Kyle started the race doing a nice job keeping the car in the hunt and setting the team’s quickest lap. Marcelli then passed it off to Rusty Mitchell who did a great coming to grips with the new car and learning do deal with the traffic in ALMS. It was under caution that Rusty pit and handed the car off to trans-am veteran Tomy Drissi. Tomy kept a good pace around the 3.7 mile circuit until just past the 3rd hour mark when debris forced its way through the radiator which caused over heating in the engine that led to the teams early retirement.
“Surely a disappointing way to leave the first round of 2011. We had a good car for the race and it showed as we were certainly in the hunt. I really enjoyed working with both Tomy Drissi and Rusty Mitchell, there was a nice synergy within the team. The Intersport crew did a wonderful job with preparation, and worked hard for a good result. All we can do now is put our heads down for a win in long Beach.” Said Race Driver Kyle Marcelli
The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach April15-16 2011 is next on the schedule for Kyle Marcelli and Intersport Racing. The event is a unique street race on the down town city streets of Long Beach, California, a favorite for many including Marcelli.
