It is with great sadness that Panoz Motor Sports report the sudden and unexpected death of John Baldwin.

John, who was 59, died of heart failure in the early hours of Tuesday morning (28th) while in Kershaw, South Carolina where the Panoz team had been testing.

Director of Racing, David Price, said today on behalf of the team: " We are all in a state of shock at the moment. John was a lovely guy and, although he'd only been with us for a relatively short time, it felt like he'd been part of Panoz for much longe r.

"His warmth as a person, sense of humour and laid-back approach to life couldn't hide the enthusiasm he still had for racing and engineering, even after more than 30 years in the business. He was liked and respected by us all, and his contribution to the team this year can never be underestimated. We will all miss him very much."

As Technical Director for Panoz Motor Sports since July of this year, John had played a vital role in the development and production of the team's new 2001 race car while, at the same time overseeing technical developments on the LMP-1 Roadster S.

A highly experienced engineer and designer, John and his family spent much time in the USA during his career. He was involved in Championship successes in Indy, Formula One and other international racing categories, and projects such as F1 4WD, F1 gas tur bine. Team Lotus and Team McLaren were two of the F1 teams with whom John had been involved at the highest level, while Parnelli Jones, Mayer Motor Racing and Arciero Wells in the US were also some of the fortunate recipients of John's many talents.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone within the Panoz organisation go out to Sandra, John's wife, and his three daughters Jo, Sarah and Victoria.
