PORTLAND, ORE. – (September 9, 2000). The Banana Joe's Island Party InterSport Racing Judd-powered Lola B2K/10 slotted into 10th place on the provisional grid for the American Le Mans Series Rose City Grand Prix of Portland. The race, on the 1.944 mile permanent road course at the Portland International Raceway, will be held Sunday, September 11, beginning at 12 noon PDT. Jon Field, Dublin, Ohio, owner/driver of InterSport Racing, will again be joined by co-driver Rick Sutherland, Los Gatos, Calif., for the Portland race. It is Sutherland’s first race at Portland with InterSport. Last year at the Rose City Grand Prix, Field, co-driving a Lola B98/Ford with Niclas Jonsson (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), went out with mechanical problems a few laps from the end of the race and finished 16th.
At the Texas Motor Speedway a week ago, InterSport finished eighth in class under torrid temperatures that hovered around 110 degrees. This weekend, temperatures, in the mid-60’s, are better for the cars, the drivers, and the crew. However, there is a threat of rain for tonight and into tomorrow. "We’ve been getting quicker each session," said Field. "Actually, we would welcome some rain, it’s a great equalizer."
The Portland track is narrow and twisting, quite different from the Texas combination oval-infield road course so the team has been struggling with getting the right set-up. In addition, the team is one of several who had to deal with noise abatement regulations at the track. After several attempts at trying to lowering the decibels generated by the car, the team finally resolved the problem by going to a local auto parts store, buying two after-market exhaust systems and modifying them to fit the car.
The race will be televised live on NBC on Sunday at noon PDT.
