TOP-10 QUALIFYING EFFORT FOR EXTREME SPEED MOTORSPORTS AT LAGUNA SECA
MONTEREY, CA – May 11, 2012 – The Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferraris are in the thick of the fight following Friday’s afternoon qualifying session at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. After a tense qualifying session, less than seven-hundredths of a second separated the top eight GT-class competitors.
The team worked against a green track with minimal grip to earn the sixth and eighth place starting positions for the six-hour American Le Mans Series (ALMS) presented by Tequila Patrón event on Saturday.
Johannes van Overbeek was tasked with the qualifying duties for the No. 01 Tequila Patrón Ferrari. Co-driving with ESM driver/owner Scott Sharp, van Overbeek took to the track and posted his quickest lap of the weekend with a lap time of 1:22.023 (97.160 mph), which placed the 01 car in the sixth position in class.
Ed Brown and Guy Cosmo shared equal seat time in No. 02 Tequila Patrón Ferrari on Thursday and Friday. Cosmo was selected to qualify the No. 02 car and worked his way around the track with a best last tie of 1:22.942 (97.138 mph), which slotted him in the eighth position for Saturday’s race.
Johannes van Overbeek “Our qualifying effort was really close. We ended up P6 and were so close to being one of the top three qualifiers. I’m a little frustrated with myself because on our quick lap, which would have put us second, I made a mistake and just couldn’t finish the lap. I was pushing so hard trying to do a good job for the Patrón ESM guys that have been working really hard to put a good Ferrari on the track.
“The good news is we have a great Ferrari for the race - it is fast and consistent. The team is well prepared. Scott is well prepared. We’re in good shape for the race.”
“It is a long race. If you look at Long Beach, we started ninth and were leading at about 40 minutes. Here we are starting sixth and we have six hours, so we have a lot of time to make up some ground.
“When we started off yesterday, the balance wasn’t quite right. Scott and I worked together really well and he took the car forward, I took the car forward. Sometimes we took it two steps forward and one step back, but now we have a far that is fast, reliable and easy to drive quickly.
“I’m glad to be racing in Laguna. This weekend is special because my family is here. There are a lot of guests with us from Patrón and a lot of friends and family for me because it is my home track and home area. I’m excited to be a part of it.”
