ALTON, VA – The DeltaWing coupe saw its most competitive laps to date, as the revolutionary prototype battled near the front of the field during the Oak Tree Grand Prix at Virginia International Raceway.

In only its second race, the coupe showed its promise in the first half of the two-hour, 45 minute event. Katherine Legge qualified the car in 13th position and Andy Meyrick started the race, using the car’s exceptional straight line speed and well-timed pit stops to put the coupe in third position overall. Pitting for fuel and tires on lap 28, Meyrick rejoined the field in 12th place and quickly worked his way back up into sixth position before an belt failure ended the day on lap 41.

“The coupe had great balance. I was able to push like crazy,” said Meyrick. “The car was great in traffic, I had great pace and was able to use our straight line speed to gap people in traffic. We’re disappointed to have had a technical issue here but I can’t thank the engineering staff and the mechanics enough, to have given us such a good race car. This is only the second race for the coupe and I think the performance so far is very impressive. We’ll use what we learned here this weekend and be ready in two weeks for Petit Le Mans.”

Given VIR’s reputation as a low-grip racetrack, the DeltaWing team and Bridgestone decided to go with the harder compound tires for the race. On a day that saw 115 degree track temperatures, it was a move that paid off in much needed grip.

“I was trying to be safe and cautious in the early laps, to let the tire temperatures come up. Watching the race from last year, I knew that this was a low-grip racetrack and that there were a lot of crashes, so I didn’t want to push too hard until the early laps sorted themselves out. But the Bridgestone tires didn’t show that much wear and were very consistent.”

The DeltaWing™ Racing Cars team finishes the 2013 racing season October 16 – 19 at their home track of Road Atlanta for the 16th Petit Le Mans: the final American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón event.
