Munich/Monterey. BMW works drivers JJ Lehto (FIN) and Jorg Muller (D) will start fourth in Sunday's American Le Mans Series race at Laguna Seca Raceway. Lehto qualified the No. 42 BMW V12 LMR on the 2.338-mile road course in one minute 16.037 seconds. Teammates Bill Auberlen (USA) and Jean-Marc Gounon (F) are sixth on the grid in the No. 43 BMW after Jean-Marc qualified in 1:16.389. BMW Team PTG driver Hans-J. Stuck (D) will start eighth in the GT class, with his qualifying time of 1:28.979.
BMW Motorsport team manager Charly Lamm: "Two BMW V12 LMRs in the second and third row is a good starting point for tomorrow's race. It seems that all the main competitors are close here in Laguna Seca, which should give us an exciting race. I'm glad that Jean-Marc could improve his grid position from yesterday, and now it's down to preparing the cars well for tomorrow."
JJ Lehto #42: "It's a repeat of yesterday. We tried different tires, but it's the maximum of the car. We didn't have any problems with it, but there's no extra time to be found."
Jorg Muller #42: "It's a pity that I have the 'flu and I'm not feeling well, because this is such a fantastic track to drive. I hope I'll be better for the race tomorrow."
Bill Auberlen #43: "Jean-Marc did a great job in qualifying, especially since he moved up a position with the new chassis. I'm looking forward to a great race on my 'home' track."
Jean-Marc Gounon #43: "It's positive for us because we won one place on the grid. We are not far away from the other car. The car feels not too bad for the race, so we'll see."
Hans-J. Stuck #7 GT: "We had to change the motor after the morning practice session. I found the track a bit slower than yesterday -- or maybe I'm slower! The car handled nicely, so I think we have a good race setup. One of our advantages is we have had a new spec Yokohama tire for a couple of races. With this tire, we can maintain our speed throughout the complete stint. For this race, the fastest driver isn't going to win, the smartest will win."
