The Audi Sport U.K. entry of two-time winner Frank Biela held a commanding six-lap lead over JJ Lehto's Champion Racing Audi after nine hours of the 52nd 12 Hours of Sebring. The pole sitting Champion Audi lost nine laps to the leading Audi after contact with a wayward Porsche in turn one forced the team to pull the car behind the wall during the fifth hour to repair the cooling system.

Three laps behind Lehto's Audi lay Rob Barff's Dallara Judd. Johnny Herbert, whose Audi spent more than 30 minutes in the pits during the race's seventh hour as the team scrambled to fix a smoking transmission, rounded out the top-five, 13 laps behind Biela.

Johnny O'Connell's Corvette C5R had a 14-lap lead over former Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan's second place Ferrari 575 GTC in the GTS class. The injury plagued ACEMECO Saleen was even farther behind the class leading Corvette.

The Alex Job Racing Porsches were running first and second in the GT class, with Sascha Maassen leading Marc Lieb by one lap. Johannes van Overbeek's Flying Lizard Porsche sat third, two laps behind Lieb.

In LMP2, Mike Borkowski's American Spirit Racing Lola Nissan set the pace, followed by Jeff Bucknum, whose Pilbeam retired during the eighth hour, and William Binnie.
