BRASELTON, Ga. -- The Audi team of drivers Allan McNish, Rinaldo Capello and Michele Alboreto dominated and won the Petit Le Mans sports car endurance race Saturday at Road Atlanta.

The winning team completed 1,000 miles around the 2.54-mile, 12-turn road course in just over nine hours in the American Le Mans Series race.

The Audi team of drivers Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro and Tom Kristensen finished second, followed by the Panoz team of David Brabham and Jan Magnussen.

The Corvette team of drivers Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins and Franck Freon won the GTS class, finishing ninth overall, while the GT class was won by drivers Bob Wollek and Sascha Maassen in a Porsche, finishing 15th overall.

BMW Prototype driver Bill Auberlen took a wild ride in a spectacular, single-car accident just over an hour into the race. As he crested a hill and closed on a slower car between turns seven and eight, Auberlen's car suddenly launched into the air, did a backward flip and then landed on its wheels before crashing into a wall. Auberlen suffered only a brusied shoulder in the incident.

Also crashing was actor Paul Newman, who was co-driving a Porsche GT car in the event. While being lapped three hours into the race, Newman tangled in turn five with a Prototype driven by Oliver Gavin. Newman's car was heavily damaged when it impacted a retaining wall after sliding off the track, but he was not injured.

The all-woman driving team of Cindi Lux, Belinda Endress and Divina Galica finished 20th, completing 828 miles in a Porsche GT car.

The next race for the ALMS will be October 15 at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif. </pre>
