Allan McNish has been in contact with Audi regarding a possible return to sportscars after being dropped by the Toyota F1 team. Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi's sports director, said McNish is one of the first choices for next year. Bentley have also put the Scot, who won the Le Mans 24 hours in 1998, on their list of possible drivers for 2003. McNish debuted in F1 this season after a long time waiting and would prefer to stay there but has not ruled out a return to sportscars.

"Allan and I are in contact," Ullrich told Motorsport News. "He is one of our first choices for next year and he would fit into our team very well. He is a very special guy, a good ambassador and an excellent driver."

McNish is optimistic of remaining in F1: "I could go to America but I would prefer to stay here as long as I can be sure of getting a competitive drive," he said. "I'm talking to more than one team and I'm optimistic I'll be able to get the drive I'm looking for. I'll be far better next year, knowing all the circuits."

He added that he always enjoyed his time in sportscars: "I have always enjoyed racing sportscars and they have been very, very good to me. I am very confident about my future but I can't tell you what it will be."
