INDIANAPOLIS (July 21, 2001) -- One of the world's most beautiful, modern and challenging racing circuits will host the final round of Le Mans-style racing for the 2001 season on the weekend of Nov. 9-11.
The Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia will be the site for Le Mans in Paradise Malaysia, a six-hour event that will be a Le Mans Series Race of Champions between top teams of both the American and European Le Mans Series.
Excitement is already building in Malaysia for the event, which will be run on Sunday, November 11. Located seven degrees north of the equator in the heart of Southeast Asia, Malaysia is a tropical paradise. Already known world-wide as a holiday destination, it is also gaining recognition as a venue for international class exhibition, trade fairs and conventions.
The opening of Sepang International Circuit in 1999 also made Malaysia an international motorsports attraction. The 3.42-mile circuit was voted to be "Most Challenging" on the Formula One circuit in 1999 by F1 drivers. A complex series of uphill and downhill turns are worked into the natural topography of the track site, and the circuit also includes two long straights.
In addition to the tough racing circuit, Sepang also includes modern and spacious amenities for both competitors and fans alike. The circuit is located at the top of the Southern Corridor of Peninsular Malaysia, bordering the states of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. It is only a short distance east of the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which serves Malaysia's capital city of the same name.
Malaysia is known as a country that has just about everything a visitor is ever likely to desire in a travel destination - fascinating scenery, friendly people, miles of white beaches, an intriguing cultural mix and fabulous local food.
Beginning in November, it will also have Le Mans-style racing.
