TRG's Pumpelly Grabs ALMS GTC Pole by Thinnest of Margins
(August 5, 2011 - Lexington, OH) Spencer Pumpelly put the TRG No. 66 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car on the pole in GTC class at this week's American Le Mans Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course by a whisker - or less. Pumpelly edged Leh Keen by twelve one-thousandth of a second, turning a fastest lap of 126.602 to Keen's 126.614.
"The track was really dirty for qualifying with everyone dipping a wheel off in order to get the fastest time," said Pumpelly. "We didn't think we had a shot at the pole, and wanted to work on the race set-up but everyone was slower than practice, so we had a chance. It's going to be another dogfight tomorrow."
Pumpelly and teammate Duncan Ende pilot TRG's Racer's Roast/Fox River Coffee Porsche, while Dion von Moltke and Marc Bunting will drive TRG's No. 68 PR Newswire/South African Airways car in Saturday's race. Von Moltke and Bunting qualified fifth in class.
TRG is coming off back-to-back one-two finishes at Lime Rock Park and Mosport. It holds a one-point lead in the GTC team championship. Ende, Pumpelly, and von Moltke are deadlocked in second place in the drivers championship behind Black Swan's Tim Pappas.
Green flag for Saturday's Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge is 3:30 pm. ET. It can be watched live on ESPN3.com in the U.S., on Rodgers TV in Canada and internationally on americanlemans.com.
