Team Panoz Names Driver Lineup For Mosport
Newcomer Sandström joining James in Abruzzi Spirit of Le Mans
Panoz Auto Development and Tom Milner’s Prototype Technology Group today announced the addition of Edward Sandström to drive for the team next week at Mosport International Raceway. He will join Ian James who has been working with Team Panoz and PTG as lead development driver since the testing program began last year.
The 32-year-old Sandström, who hails from Orebro, Sweden and is a regular in the FIA GT3 championship in Europe, is looking forward to the challenges of Mosport. A past Swedish Junior Touring Car champion and Scandinavian Porsche Carrera Cup champion, he is excited to try his hand in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
Panoz and PTG first showed the Abruzzi Spirit of Le Mans at Petit Le Mans last October at Road Atlanta. It did turn a processional lap prior to the annual 1,000-mile/10-hour event and was the centerpiece of the Panoz display in the main paddock. The Abruzzi “Spirit of the Le Mans” racer and its road-going counterpart sat alongside the Panoz GTR-1, LMP-01 prototype and the Esperante street car in a Panoz family tree.
The Abruzzi “Spirit of Le Mans” is set to carry on a successful history of Panoz in motorsport. With 10 class victories – including eight overall – in the American Le Mans Series and the 2002 Trans-Am championship, the manufacturer is one of the most renowned in the world. In addition to winning at Sebring and Le Mans, Panoz has won at such venues as Road Atlanta, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Sears Point, Portland, the Nürburgring and Washington DC.
