Smith Retains Championship Lead After Placing Second In Canada
Yorkshireman Guy Smith placed second in round four of the American Le Mans Series at Mosport yesterday (24 July).
Beverley-born Smith and his American co-driver Chris Dyson finished 28.420secs behind the winners to retain the series lead.
Their #16 Lola Mazda Coupé started from the front row of the 31-car grid courtesy of Dyson’s qualifying efforts the previous afternoon – the third time in four races the G-OIL/ModSpace/Construct Corps sponsored car has started either first or second.
Dyson pitted for fuel and tyres in second place during a full course caution period after 40mins, the American inheriting the lead as the 165-minute race resumed around the high-speed, historic 2.5-mile circuit near Toronto.
The Lola of championship title rivals Lucas Luhr/Klaus Graf slipped ahead of Dyson at mid-distance but 10mins later Dyson briefly went back ahead when Luhr pitted to Graf. Smith took over from Dyson moments later with Guy resuming second, 16secs behind Graf, with 67mins remaining.
Second-placed Smith set the race’s fastest lap before a final stop for fuel with 32mins to run before going on the take the chequered flag in second place behind the winning Luhr/Graf Lola.
“I could go fast in ‘clean air’ and push like mad in the corners but when I was in traffic, I had no power to overtake,” reflected Smith.
“Although I set the race’s fastest lap, the Luhr/Graf Lola was faster than us today. The team will work hard between now and the next race to recover the pace we are losing.”
