Joey Logano moved back to the top of the list as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver who will be named to take over the No. 22 car for the Penske Racing camp. The current Joe Gibbs Racing driver was one of the first drivers expected to land the coveted ride to compete for victories in the Ford next year.
The switch to Ford was announced by Roger Penske earlier this year, and in early August, it was announced that Roush Yates Engines would power the Ford.
On August 14th, Ryan Newman was moved to the top of the rumor list for the Penske ride due to the fact that he and Stewart-Haas Racing had not signed a new contract. However, just days beforehand, he said that his goal was “to stay at Stewart-Haas and keep doing what we’re doing, and we’re working on that.”
It affects you, for sure.
Logano has not had the best of season for the JGR Toyota team this year, and his contract will expire at the end of this season. That opened the door for him to be available for the Penske seat.
The Cup teams were at Atlanta this past weekend, and when reliable sources leaked the fact that Logano will sign with Penske this week, he did not deny or confirm. The Joe Gibbs Racing team will announce their choice for the No. 20 Toyota, and it will not be Logano.
Logano commented on his status as a free agent this past weekend, saying it "is a pain it the butt. It's a distraction. It affects you, for sure. That's why you want to get it done as soon as possible."
Since moving up to the Cup cars with Joe Gibbs’ team, Logano has notched two wins; his most recent one was at Pocono this year. 2012 has not been a good one for Logano as he sits 18th in the current standings. His hope of landing a wild card for the Chase for the Cup is very thin.
