Danica Patrick uses Facebook to announce her impending divorce

There are many ways that celebrities decide to inform their fans and business cohorts what is happening in their lives. Danica Patrick may one be the first racing star to use a social media platform to announce a change in one’s personal life.

The petite NASCAR driver, and former IndyCar racer, informed the world that her seven-year marriage to Paul Hospenthal is over. On her Facebook page, she said: "I am sad to inform my fans that after 7 years, Paul and I have decided to amicably end our marriage.”

When their engagement was announced, many comments were made at the 17-year age difference. The diminutive woman had not yet even won a major race, and before their wedding day in 2005, the paparazzi were already surrounding the two.

Patrick waited until the end of the NASCAR season at Homestead-Miami Speedway to break the news. She completed her first full-season in the Nationwide series this past Saturday with the JR Motorsports Chevrolet team.

She also ran selective races in the Sprint Cup Series with Tony Stewart’s support. During the season, her fans would see her behind wheel of one of two Chevrolet teams: Phoenix Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing; including Sunday’s season finale.

Her finish in the Nationwide championship standings was 10th, and last night, she was one of the media stars at the year-end NASCAR banquet for the Camping World and the Nationwide series in Miami. She was voted by the fans as the Most Popular Driver in the Nationwide series. Patrick also posted a "Thank you" her fans message on her Facebook page.

Patrick’s fans are already rallying around her with their support via messages on her Facebook page. Her fan base started even before her first race in the IndyCar series.

The highest-finishing female driver in any of three top series wrote on her Facebook: "This isn't easy for either of us, but mutually it has come to this. He has been an important person and friend in my life and that's how we will remain moving forward."

Patrick left IndyCar at the end of the 2011 season for NASCAR. Her two accomplishments in IndyCar put Patrick in the IndyCar record books: Her win in Japan was the first for a female racer. The next year, Patrick again showed her speed at the 2009 Indianapolis 500, and her third place was the highest finish by a woman in the event’s long history.

For the 2013, Patrick will contest the full-season in the Sprint Cup series with Stewart's team.
