Cheng Cong Fu takes an historical home race podium
The hottest race of the year came at Zhuhai International Circuit with the fourth round of the 2007 A1 GP series. The much anticipated race was held over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of December.
In Saturday's qualifying sessions, China team performed very well and Cheng Cong Fu managed to qualify 4th and 6th for the sprint and feature race respectively, this result meant a good beginning for Sunday's races.
As the Sprint race started, Cheng Cong fu followed very closely the drivers for grid 1st to 3rd, which successfully prevented him from the serious accidents that took place between South Africa and other three drivers. In the following laps, Cheng gave Ireland team continuous pressure, the packed grandstand roared when Cheng made a sensational move past Ireland driver on lap 10 to grab 3rd place. The 23-year-old Beijing young man went on to take the first podium finish of his career in A1 GP and China's first of the season.
In afternoon's Feature race, Cheng Cong Fu continued his good form in the beginning period of the race climbing till the 5th place. During the 2nd pit stop, he had made a little mistake of over speed because of focusing too much on the intention of surpassing South Africa's driver who stood in his way forward. After the pit lane passing penalty, Cheng's position dropped to 10th. But he didn't give up the attempt of promoting just as a real professional driver did. In lap 40, USA driver lost his racing line under the powerful pressure which was given by Cheng, and Cheng took 9th place and kept it to the finish line, and the close gap between Czech Republic driver of him was only 0.439 second.
Cheng Cong Fu was delighted with his first podium finish and overwhelmed by all the support from his home fans: "It was a great race and I want to say thanks to the crowd and to A1 Team China. It feels fantastic to deliver the first podium of the season for myself and for the team. The crowd was great and big thanks to the team that prepare a very good car, I'm speechless."
The next race of A1GP will be held in Taupo Circuit in New Zealand on January 20th,2008.
