A1 TEAM USA's Rice 13th in open test at Silverstone
SILVERSTONE, England--A1 TEAM USA's Buddy Rice was 13th in the A1GP open test Tuesday at Silverstone, but it didn't bother him a bit.
Why not? Rice made long runs to simulate racing conditions rather than trying for one ultimate fast lap. His quickest lap of 48.821 seconds on the 1.64-mile National Circuit was 11th out of 22 cars in the morning session.
"I think that we ran well today," Rice said. "We are definitely competitive and are getting the car closer to where it needs to be. We really didn't work on doing the quickest lap as much as we worked on our race setup."
Rice, of Phoenix, Ariz., has spent 2 1/2 days testing, running previously on Aug. 28-29, at Silverstone in the A1GP-mandated Lola-Zytek. The 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner ran 130 laps Tuesday.
"I think that we should be in good shape headed into the first round," Rice said. "I am still getting to know the car, but I am really excited to run the 'We The People' car at the opening round of the A1GP series."
Charlie Kimball will make his A1 TEAM USA debut Wednesday (Sept. 19) as A1GP completes its preaseason testing with a half day of running. Kimball, of Camarillo, Calif., is eligible to run the two morning all-rookie practices on Friday at race weekends.
"We had a good TEST day. Buddy's feedback is excellent, which is a huge improvemnt for the team this year," A1 TEAM USA owner Rick Weidinger said. "We got through an ambitious testing plan that (race engineer) Leon (Gutfreund) prepared and executed including camber, castor, springs, dampers and aero. We were actually P5 in the morning session, but finished the first day of testing P13.
"We worked well as a team in testing with Buddy and ran plenty of laps to develop the car for the season opener. We have done our homework. Zandvoort will be our first grade. Charlie is next up in the 'We The People' car for testing Wednesday morning. I am anxious to see how he does and expect him to do well."
The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport season starts Sept. 28-30 at Zandvoort, The Netherlands.
