Kimball solid in debut for A1 TEAM USA
Charlie Kimball drove for A1 TEAM USA for the first time Wednesday, completing 96 laps at Silverstone's National Circuit in the A1GP half-day open test.
Kimball, a candidate to drive in A1GP's all-rookie practices on the Friday mornings of race weekends, ran 48.572 seconds on the 1.64-mile circuit and was 17th in a field of 22 dominated by veteran A1GP drivers.
"The test was a lot of fun, " Kimball said. "I really enjoyed the 'We The People' car. The power and size of the tires made it move around a lot, but it was still very controllable. I feel like I did a really good job and set a very respectable lap time for my first time in the car. I am sure I could have gone quicker with another set of new tires."
Kimball, a 22-year-old from Camarillo, Calif., was selected to test by A1 TEAM USA owner Rick Weidinger based upon his outstanding record in Europe. He's won races in the Formula 3 Euroseries, British F3, United Kingdom Formula Ford and the British winter FF. Kimball is racing this season in the World Series by Renault.
Driving for A1 TEAM USA was a different experience for Kimball.
"It was a very neat experience to be in a car that was representing my country," Kimball said. "It is a very unique concept to be able to race for the USA. I really appreciate everyone at A1 TEAM USA for the opportunity to drive the car and look forward to being in the A1 car again soon."
Kimball met Weidinger during A1GP's inaugural race at Brands Hatch in 2005 and have stayed in contact since then.
"We thank Charlie for his effort and contribution to A1 TEAM USA," Weidinger said. "He performed a solid test session for us. We were very impressed with his results as he ran some very fast laps for his first time in the 'We The People' car. We will announce our driver line-up for Zandvoort early next week."
Wednesday was the final preseason test for A1GP, which does not allow private testing. The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport season starts Sept. 28-30 at Zandvoort, The Netherlands.
