Hutchinson Design; the power behind A1 Team Ireland's high-visibility
Dublin, 09 January 2009; With the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport set to recommence in two weeks time at Taupo, New Zealand, series leader A1 Team Ireland is once again assisted in maximizing its on-track visibility thanks to its multi-year partnership with leading car and team-livery design company Hutchinson Design.
The company, run by world-renowned designer Ian Hutchinson, has designed A1 Team Ireland's award-winning liveries in both the previous 2006-07 and 2007-08 A1GP seasons, ensuring that the Irish team has been the benchmark organisation in terms of professional image and high impact visibility on and off the track.
Hutchinson started working with A1 Team Ireland in 2006 after being approached by Team Principal Mark Gallagher, the two having worked together when Gallagher was head of Marketing at Jordan Grand Prix. At Jordan, Hutchinson had provided the livery design for what is widely regarded as the most memorable of the team's cars - the 1991 7Up Jordan-Ford which took the team to 5th place in the FIA Formula One Constructors' World Championship and was used by Michael Schumacher on his Formula One debut at that year's Belgian Grand Prix. Prior to that Hutchinson Design had developed a number of famous livery designs including that of the Le Mans-winning Silk Cut Jaguars and the F3000 and World Rally Championship Q8 Team Ford entries.
In the 1990's Hutchinson was responsible for a further string of famous designs including that of Michael Schumacher's 1994 Formula One World Championship-winning Mild Seven Benetton-Ford, an engagement with Mild Seven that continued until 2006. Culminating in Hutchinson designing the most prominent logo in F1 for both 2005-06 seasons. As a result of his success with Ireland in A1GP, Hutchinson Design was invited by the series organisers to design and develop the new A1GP World Cup of Motorsport - powered by Ferrari identity which was introduced for this season, a task which involved introducing the world-famous Ferrari brand into A1GP's brand identity.
"The work that Hutchinson Design has carried out for Ireland has undoubtedly been central to ensuring our high visibility within A1GP," says Team Principal Mark Gallagher. "Having worked with Ian before in Formula One it was natural to approach him to help us raise the bar in terms of livery and graphic design. His development of the unique, fluorescent green colour which we now use, combined with the secondary colours of white and blue, has made our car one of the most easily recognized on TV. The creation of the Ireland shamrock logo and its representation across our team has also been very successful, enabling us to utilise a widely recognized symbol as we race at venues on five continents. For sponsors, having Hutchinson Design as a resource means that we can guarantee the best possible visibility on TV, in stills photography and of course for trackside spectators."
"When designing a team image everyone wants to see the race car visual," says Hutchinson," but I knew in my own mind that the livery would be special so I held it back while presenting Ireland with all the other team elements such as clothing, driver overalls, garage paneling and so on. The race machine and its bodylining had a story behind it because research is 90% of my job."
"I found a photograph of the hills and mountains in Ireland, sweeping down towards the sea, and the shapes and colours within this formed the basis of the design of the bodylining - hence the combination of vivid green and blue. Developing it took a long time and I rejected a number of paint samples before settling on one that was precisely the right formulation. That gave Ireland the most highly visible car in A1GP and led directly to me being invited to design both the Canada and GBR liveries in 2007-08. A1GP is a terrific series to work with, allowing me to develop designs which incorporate national identities, which is unique in international motor racing."
With Ireland winning the A1GP Mexico City Feature Race last season and taking the lead in this year's series with wins in China and Malaysia in November, Hutchinson Design has been a key partner in ensuring the Irish team is able to make the most of becoming the pace setter in A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.
