SUPER SUPPORT CATEGORIES CONFIRMED FOR NITRO SUPERGP
In addition to the headline acts of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport and V8 Supercars Championship Series the 2009 Nitro SuperGP will feature a strong line up of support categories over the four-day event on the Gold Coast this October 22-25.
Event Organisers have confirmed that the highly popular Aussie Racing Cars will return to the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit along with the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship.
The Aussie Racing Cars will bring the 4.47km street circuit to life with an excess of 30 drivers expected to line up for the Nitro SuperGP.
"The Nitro SuperGP is the highlight on our calendar. It has got a bit of everything, it's got fun with the excitement of motor racing and the glamour of the Gold Coast -- it is just fantastic," said Aussie Racing Cars Category Manager Phil Ward.
"We've been racing on the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit for five years in a row and are looking forward to going back there, I'm confident of again having big fields which will provide some great racing for the fans."
The Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship has been the springboard for many of today's V8 Supercar drivers and A1 Team Australia's most recent driver John Martin.
This year's Nitro SuperGP will be the first time since 2000 that the open-wheel category has competed on the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit, where it featured as a non-championship event. On that occasion the race victories were split between Justin Cotter and Toowoomba's Will Power.
"Every time that we've raced at the Gold Coast previously it has been for a non-championship event, so it will be good to go there with championship points on the line," said Category Manager Margaret Hardy.
"We've got a whole new generation of Formula Ford drivers who have never raced there before and everyone in the category is really looking forward to hitting the track and experiencing the event's atmosphere in October."
Making its debut in the Nitro SuperGP line up will be the 154kw, 1.6 litre engine MINIs as they line up for the Haymans Electrical MINI Challenge.
"In only our second year we are delighted to be a part of such a marquee event which combines the international spectacle of the A1 Grand Prix and our home grown V8 Supercar Championship," said MINI Challenge's Rafael Toda.
"With MINI celebrating its 50th anniversary this year the Nitro SuperGP is a fitting event where we can continue the celebrations.
"At MINI we are also very excited to be working with Event Promoters IMG and with the MINI Challenge headquarters being based on the Gold Coast everyone is really looking forward to the Nitro SuperGP."
The 2009 Nitro SuperGP, October 22-25, will be one of the first rounds of the 2009/10 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport and Event 11 of the V8 Supercars Championship Series.
