Team USA pleased with Friday's practice result
Giebler finishes with 5th fastest time in practice session

SEPANG, Malaysia--In a day hampered by rain, A1 TEAM USA emerged from Friday's practice at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia with the fifth fastest time and very encouraged.

Despite it being his first run on the circuit, veteran driver Phil Giebler finished with the 5th fastest time. Positions 1, 2, and 3 were taken by drivers who had been in the rookie session, and Giebler was still able to outpace three others who had participated in the rookie practice as well.

"We played to our strengths today," said Giebler, following the practice. "We had changeable weather and a couple of hiccups with the car, but we all stayed focused. I ended up right in there at the top of the times, with the guys who had an extra practice session and new tires. It's great because we are showing good potential every time we take to the track." Giebler's best lap came after the track had dried following a rainstorm which interrupted the session approximately 20 minutes in.

A1 TEAM USA Owner Rick Weidinger commented, "We had gear selection problems in our first and only practice session on Friday. We got stuck in first gear at one point and Phil had difficulty downshifting. There are some pointers in the data, which indicate some sort of mechanical issue. We must begin to reduce these mechanical demons and become consistent with our race car. However, Phil stayed very focused and got better and better. He was still matching his best lap at the end of the session, even though his tires were getting worse, and his fuel pressure was spiking. Fifth is a good place to improve from for Saturday's qualifying round."

A1GP action resumes tomorrow with a further practice session and four 15-minute qualifying segments that will determine the grid for the Sprint race on Sunday. Sunday's Sprint race starts at 11am local time (10pm EST Saturday) with the Feature race starting at 3pm in Malaysia (2am EST Sunday).
