SENTUL, Indonesia--Coming off a sixth place finish in Sepang, Malaysia two weeks ago, A1 TEAM USA returns to the 2.56 mile Sentul International Circuit in Indonesia for the fifth round of the 2006/07 season. Phil Giebler will be behind the wheel of the "We The People" car for the December 10, 2006 A1 GP race.
"I'm really looking forward to this race--getting on a track that I'm familiar with," said Giebler. "I came away with a nice finish the last time I was here, and I'm looking to outdo myself this time around."
A1 TEAM USA owner, Rick Weidinger believes that the chances are greater that they will do better then last season's ninth place finish. "TEAM USA comes into the Indonesia round with a driver who has experience at Sentul, a race engineer who was on the podium last year and a more experienced and cohesive support team. Three's a charm!"
The Sentul International Circuit provides teams with a unique challenge among A1 tracks. The track surface gives rise to millions of fine grains of sand. It is customary for teams to prepare for any race by covering the leading edges of the car with clear helicopter tape. This is normally adequate to protect the paintwork from being damaged by debris. In Sentul last season, however, the peppering of sand was sufficient to penetrate this tape, the outer skin of the bodywork, and in several areas, to create sizeable holes in the underbody of the car. In response to this, TEAM USA is preparing for this year's race by adding patches of Kevlar (the material used in bulletproof vests) to the front of the car. This will protect the car from major damage.
The weekend's racing action for TEAM USA begins on Friday, December 8 at the first team practice session from 2 -- 3pm. Final practice and qualifying for the Sprint race will take place on Saturday, December 9, with the Sprint and Feature races scheduled for Sunday, December 10 at 11am [11 pm EST Saturday] and 3pm [3 am EST Sunday] respectively.
