Double victory for A1 Team France in Mexico
26 February 2006, Monterrey (Mexico) A1 Team France took another double victory in Monterrey, Mexico, racking up its twelfth and thirteenth wins from eighteen races this season. Driver Alexandre Premat started from pole in both races. He was promoted to pole position in the sprint race after South Africa was penalized for a technical infringement.
"I am so happy to have won the sprint race," said Premat who has now steered the A1 Team France car to seven of the thirteen wins. "I made a mistake in the first chicane and Neel Jani almost passed me, but I kept the control and my sprint race was trouble-free. Throughout the races we suffered from a lack of grip. The car worked well, but it was quite demanding driving on this slippery surface.
"The feature race was quite straight-forward, though we did have some concerns that the weather might change. As part of our strategy, I was the first to pit and my team mate Nicolas Lapierre even helped change my tyres! He replaced one of our mechanics, who hurt his hand yesterday. Verstappen was pushing quite hard behind me, but I maintained a comfortable gap over him. I'm so happy for the team with today's results it was fantastic to win in front of so many of our supporters here from the French community based in Monterrey."
Jean-Paul Driot, team principal, A1 Team France commented, "I am of course very pleased with today's double win and fantastic results in both races. Whether it's the first win of the season or the thirteenth, like today it feels just as good, but the championship is not over and we remain fully focussed for the next round. The pressure is still on and we will continue fighting like we have done all season."
After the ninth round of the new A1 Grand Prix series, A1 Team France has won for the twelfth and thirteenth time and extended its lead in the championship with a total of 153 points. The next round will be staged at Laguna Seca - California, USA Mar 12, 2006 where Nicolas Lapierre is the nominated driver.
