A1 Team Switzerland starts into 10th round of A1 GP in Laguna Seca

It was a long time to wait until the first wheel turned into the tenth round of A1 Grand Prix series at Laguna Seca, USA: Due to very heavy rain showers during the last days one of the two planned free practice sessions had to be cancelled and the second one had to be delayed until 4 p.m. Track officials did their best to make a start of the 520-hp A1 Grand Prix formula race cars possible. The track was in bad condition with big puddles, mud and wet sand beside the course.

Even when the field of 22 A1 Grand Prix cars took the practice under their wheels dust made it no easy job for the drivers. Giorgio Mondini, in Laguna Seca for the first time at the wheel for A1 Team Switzerland, set a fastest time of 1,20.758 minutes. The 25-year old did 28 laps on the demanding Laguna Seca raceway and commented: "My first aim was to do the planned number of laps to get used to the car and the circuit. We did this 100 percent. But I have to say it is difficult to change from F1 to A1. For example the noise of the engine is much lower. So I couldn't hear the exact timing for gear change. At the same time in some corners I was too high in gears and expected more torque. But after all I did some good progression and the car feels very good. Tomorrow we have to get everything together."

Max Welti, team principal, added: "Under difficult track conditions we had a quite reasonable session. Giorgio obviously has to adjust from F1 to A1 which is not easy. We continue working tomorrow to make this as easy as possible for him in order to progress a maximum for qualifying and the races."

A1 Team Switzerland is one of 25 teams contesting the new A1 Grand Prix Series, the "World Cup of Motorsport". After the last round in Mexico, A1 Team Switzerland is ranked second in the championship with 121 points.
