POSITIVE WEEK END AT DURBAN FOR CHENG CONG FU AND TEAM CHINA
On last week end A1GP visited the coast line city of Durban in South Africa for its 7th appointment of the series. Although Cheng Cong Fu ranked in the middle of the grid in both qualify sessions he performed well in both street races. He kept making several continuous over-taking and successfully managed to avoid the crashes that many time frozen the races with safety car phases. Finally he scored the 4th of the Sprint Race and the 6th of the Feature Race, winning 14 points for Team China that now is ranked 10th in the overall Championship.
The Sprint Race saw Cheng Cong Fu come back from the 11th place on the grid to a final 4th place, just behind the podium's positions, with several overtakes and having advantage of some other drivers' mistakes, Cheng was able to score is second best ever result in A1 GP in the difficult street circuit of Durban.
In the afternoon Feature Race, Safety Car came out several times. Cheng Cong Fu was also effected by a contact at the start; the teams promptly react changing the damaged front nose in a short time making him running without loosing so much time and keeping him still in the battle. He managed to climbed back with his techniques and calmness. As the race turned into the middle phase, Cheng managed to overtook the drivers of Italy and Brazil respectively in two laps, coming to 7th from the 19th he was after the initial lap. The races ended with a final 6th place adding 5 points more to Team China.
The great performance was completed by setting the fastest lap of the race in 1'18"744. This was his second time of winning the precious one point in A1GP 2008 for the team.
Cheng Cong Fu said after the race: "it was really a fierce race. I was affected by the crashes. But I stuck to the plans and strategies that the team approved beforehand; I was not expecting that many accidents in the race and I was lucky not to be involved with. The 4th of the Sprint Race and the 6th of the Feature Race were satisfying to me especially considering it was my first visit to Durban; it's my best points score in an A1 GP race week end . Though I did not make to the podium, I was happy to have a the fastest lap, the second after Race Brno in Czech, good sign showing that team and driver are working well."
The next race of A1GP will be held in Mexico on March 16th.
